I don't remember the exact context in which I first watched this episode -- maybe it was late, and I hadn't eaten, or something -- but I remember the spider-Barclay jumpscare scaring the absolute fucking piss out of me, just like it did Picard. It might have been Picard's reaction that got me, more than anything else. I genuinely can't remember much except for being utterly terrified for a split second.

Whenever I think of mythical episodes of Next Generation, I think of Q Who, Best of Both Worlds, Darmok, Cause and Effect... and this one.

The two of you shaking along to the wave made me think: this may be a bit silly, but I'd love to see you react to TNG bloopers! The first few seasons, at least, have some great ones.

I do have to disagree that the episode is ableist in some way -- the episode itself doesn't take a stance at all (nor should it for such a complex issue as this), it's the characters within the episode that all have different opinions on the response to such a debilitating injury.

It's such a little moment, but I fucking love the way Crusher and Riker react to Data's attempt at emulating the small talk. They laugh, they're incredulous, but they're not stupid; they know exactly what Data is trying to do, so they just enjoy it.

This may be my favourite season ender. Bill and 12 are one of my favourite pairings, and this is an incredible ending for both of them.

Sadly "faith" is a tool used to divide, manipulate and exploit people, often en masse. It is used to exonerate and excuse horrific actions and inactions. It is used, all too often, to dismiss science, logic, prudence, equity, tolerance and objectivity. To suppress it is unjust, but I wish people would choose to relegate it to historical obsolescence.

I've always founds Worf's fatherhood story fascinating. The typical arc, played out over many seasons, would be for him to slowly become a great father and love and bond with his son. Instead, he... just kind of stays a crappy father. Not in a "bad storytelling" way, though, like he never develops. He tries, he reaches out, he's just... really, really bad at it. And I've always found it incredibly unique that he otherwise depicted as a good man -- honorable, loyal, dependable, honest -- who just happens to be absolutely terrible at fatherhood. It's an interesting message to convey -- that you can still be a good person, even if you aren't a good parent.

I still find it hard to hear Jerry O'Connell as Ransom. Seen him in so many other things but just don't hear him. Everyone else I can hear. He does a great job

This episode officially made the Spock helmet canon. When Mariner was Pulling out all her secret contraband from their hiding places, you see the Spock helmet being held by the chief engineer. They sold this helmet in the 70s and 80s, the helmet just said Spock on it with a flashing red light..

"Series 9" is a stylistic experiment in film. I understand your reaction, but you know, if you have love for Red Dwarf, accept this experience as a part of it... I'm glad they take risks like this, but it is the weakest series IMHO.

Am pretty sure they do eventually cover what happened. If memory serves it took them a little to get back into the vibe after the break. Gets better and they are properly back in the groove in Series 10.

Red Dwarf series 8 wasn't particularly well received when it aired in 1999 which was why they never followed it up with series 9. From Back to Earth onwards, Red Dwarf was no longer produced by the BBC. It was taken over by an independent British Freeview channel called Dave which decided to essentially write off series 8. You might also notice that the ship is back to its original configuration and not its elongated series 8 CGI design? Unfortunately, going forward this Red Dwarf reboot just doesn't live up to the classic series.

This Marc Alaimo guy seems pretty good! They should get him back to do more.

People ban be such putz'. This was one of my favorite episodes. I laughed out loud several scenes.

I know it makes sense in the context of the episode, but the line, "If there's nothing wrong with me, maybe there's something wrong with the universe!" always makes me chuckle. In any other context its such a wildly narcissistic line.

It really is such a great episode. Honestly, I think season two episode one might be a better season first episode then in season one. Can’t wait to see your reaction for S2 ep2. Such a great one.

The most important thing to realize about Worf is that because he mythologized the Klingons from a distance, learning about and emulating their ideal values, rather than the more grounded and corrupt reality, he grew up into the most ideal Klingon ever.

The one and only incredibly minor nitpick I have with this episode is its depiction of the Romulans as so brutal and heartless that they would kill a child who was born blind. The story about the cold war between the Federation and the Romulans has always worked best when both sides are, at their core, reasonable, but have decades of mistrust and (at least on the Romulan side) a militant and expansionist government to overcome. Depicting them as that savage is more in line with how the original series depicted Klingons.

I used to get stuck in the same bit ( the driving around in the van on the Map) of the TMNT game. Could never work out where I was meant to go.

The continuity does get frustrating. The original Rimmer left and so does Kochanski. Not a fan of this series at all but the newer ones are funny and get back on form.

season 9 was made by the channel dave as they bought the show off the bbc and then they made more of it and the buget for the show went up alot

You're still relatively new to all this. I started watching your viewings of it a few months ago, but I know you started about 10 months ago. 8 series and 1 3rd of a 9 is a LOT of take in in just 10 months. I came to it in the late 90s in a BBC America all day showing. Anyway, it's well known they don't care an awful lot about continuity. It's a comedy, after all. Have you seen The Simpsons? Lol. Like I said, I started it just after it's original run ended. When it came back 10 years later, it didn't blip in my head at all about it. It was new Dwarf. It's best in comedy to see it like Al Jean of The Simpsons sees it: flexible reality. Oh, and it's kinda short circuited by only watching a third of the thing. Knowing that, would it have been better to wait than to get kinda upset about the Russian hologram lady? At least that's explained lol. All I'll say is it has a connection to an old episode...
